Former President John Dramani Mahama has said he never considered the Ford Expedition that was given to him by a Burkinabe contractor during his administration as a personal gift.

Rather he said, it was part of the state vehicles which was left for the current government to be used for official duties.

Burkinabe contractor, Djibril Kanazoe was said to have presented the Ford Expedition worth $100,000 to the former President as a friendly gesture.

The gift became a very controversial issue ahead of the 2016 elections as the then opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP) especially, was of the view that the President Mahama contradicted himself by accepting the gift.

But Ex-President Mahama said, “that vehicle still is in the pool of government vehicles and even as I hand over to my predecessor, the vehicle is still in the service of Ghana. I was never under any illusion that that vehicle was given to me as a gift personally and never considered it as a personal gift,” he stated.

He added that “the vehicle continues to serve government under my administration and has been left to the new administration.”

The former President was speaking to South African-based radio station Power FM. He is in South Africa to deliver the keynote address at the Africa Leadership Awards in Johannesburg.
