Southampton sack Claude Puel

Southampton have sacked manager Claude Puel after one season.

The 55-year-old Frenchman's future had been in doubt despite Saints finishing eighth in the Premier League and reaching the EFL Cup final, having succeeded Ronald Koeman who left St Mary's for Everton last summer.

Sky Sports News HQ reported last week that Saints director of football Les Reed was considering potential replacements after concluding his end-of-season review for chairman Ralph Krueger.

And a club statement on Wednesday read: "Southampton can today confirm that it has terminated the contract of Claude Puel with immediate effect.

"Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year. We wish Claude well for the future.

"The search for a new management team is underway. We are confident that we will find the right fit in line with the long-term vision of the club."

Puel, who was boss at Nice until he moved to England's south coast last summer, won only 12 of his 38 Premier League games last season and they finished only six points above 17th.

After reports Southampton were considering Marco Silva, who has taken over at Watford, Puel was backed by Chelsea's Eden Hazard as one of the world's top coaches, the Belgium star having worked with him at Lille.

Puel would not comment on persistent reports he could be replaced as the season drew to a close and said he wanted to continue as manager at St Mary's.

Nii Odartey Lamptey's ex-wife loses landmark divorce payout

The former wife of Nii Odartey Lamptey has lost a claim for a 50% share of the fortunes of the former Ghana and Anderlecht star in a heart-wrenching infidelity drama which has dragged on for four years ago.

An Accra High Court has ruled on Wednesday Gloria Appiah committed 'adultery' when she gave birth to three children out of wedlock and subsequently quashed her motion to be awarded half of the property of the former footballer.

Justice Cecilia Don-Chebe Agbevey who put finality to the winding legal battle also ordered the wife to vacate the footballer's 7-bedroom apartment in East Legon within 30 days.

She was however allocated a property at Dome - a suburb of Accra as compensation - leaving the player with the clearance to keep majority of his wealth.

"I thank God for taking me through this fight successfully because I didn’t know how far I could go. I’m grateful that the toils that I have gone through for the past 21 years did not go in vain. Though I’ve lost a few properties, I’m very content that at the end of this case, I have retained most of them and I’m still alive too," he told Starr FM's Alexander Anyankwaa

“When I was informed that the [three] children were not mine, I know how I felt. Playing the role of a father to children I thought were mine for 21 years and realizing otherwise later, I nearly committed suicide. God gave me renewed energy and courage to withstand these pains and today, I can say I have gotten over them all.

“And today, with the final judgement, I thank God that my properties, my school and others I have kept them. She can take the little awarded her. Today the divorce has been granted and that burden that was on me is gone. Now, I’m a free and happy man, ready to start life again.

DNA results revealed the 42-year-old never fathered any of his three children after 20-years of marriage in a chilling expose' which marked a dramatic end to the relationship.

Lamptey has insisted he never asked his estranged wife to sleep with other men to get pregnant for him over claims he was 'impotent'.

The ex-Ghana star, who now has two children with movie star Ruweida Yakubu, endured an emotional breakdown and needed therapy.

Floyd Mayweather books MGM Grand for August 26... is Conor McGregor super-fight finally on?

Mayweather Promotions have booked the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for a 'boxing event' on August 26.

For months Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor's mooted cross-over fight has been speculated over, but this is the strongest indicator yet that the blockbuster clash will go ahead.

There are no further details of the fight to take place, sparking rumours that this could finally be the time and location of what promises to be one of the most lucrative bouts in history.

The only other information of note is in the booking on the Nevada Athletic Commission's website which states that the bout will be televised on ShowTime.

ShowTime have enjoyed a deal with the unbeaten American to film his fights, further fuelling the speculation.

McGregor and the UFC made it clear in recent weeks that their side of the agreement was confirmed whilst Mayweather and his chief representative Al Haymon were yet to agree terms.

But the Dubliner teased fans with an impending announcement on his Instagram earlier as he said: 'Something big is coming.'

The UFC phenomenon had been quiet in recent weeks as talk of his next move subsided and he spent time with his partner Dee Devlin and newborn son.

That famous left hand could be tested against one of the finest boxers ever should his hiatus end with a meeting in the squared circle with Mayweather.

But 40-year-old Mayweather's signature is still required for the go ahead which would surely capture the imagination of fight fans everywhere as the worlds of boxing and MMA collide.

Golden State defeat Cleveland Cavaliers to claim NBA crown

The Golden State Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 129-120 to win their second NBA championship in three seasons with a 4-1 finals series victory.

The Warriors, who beat Cleveland in the 2015 Finals only to lose to them last year after squandering a 3-1 series lead, went a record-setting 15-1 in the playoffs, their only loss coming in Game Four of the best-of-seven championship.

Kevin Durant led the way for the Warriors with 39 points, with Stephen Curry contributing 34.

But it took a team effort for the Warriors to overcome a determined Cavaliers' squad, including contributions from 33-year-old veteran Andre Iguodala and 21-year-old Patrick McCaw.

Though the Cavaliers led 37-33 at the end of the first quarter, Golden State soon reasserted their dominance by winning the second 38-23 to lead 71-60 at half-time.

The Cavs narrowed the gap slightly in the third, with LeBron James hitting a game-high 41 points, but defensive breakdowns by Cleveland led to easy baskets late in the game for the Warriors as they sealed victory at the Oracle Arena in Oakland.

Durant was named finals MVP after scoring over 30 points in each of the five games as he averaged 35.2 per game across the series.
