Isaac Sackey’s trainer, Vincent Akai Nettey and two of his cornermen have been handed three months ban each by the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBA) for their violent conduct.

The culprits were involved in the violent conduct during a bout between Isaac Sackey and Wasiru Mohammed for a World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Africa Super bantamweight title at the Bokum Boxing Arena on October 13, 2018.

The affected cornermen, Osman Nii Armah Brew and John Clottey, and Nettey are all from the Attoh Quarshie Boxing Club. The GBA has revoked licenses for the suspension period, starting from December 1 to February 28, 2019.

A statement released by the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) indicated that the decision was arrived at after considering the evidence on the night, as well as responses from the persons involved.

“At the hearing, each of the respondents pleaded liable to the charges preferred against them and pleaded for leniency. Additionally, executives of the Coaches and Trainers Association added their voices and put in their respective pleas for leniency for the respondents,” the statement disclosed.

“However, upon consideration of facts and circumstances on the case, the Disciplinary Committee decided to sanction each of the respondents.”

Violence broke out when Beninois Referee, Adon Bertin, without applying the mandatory count stopped the bout after Sackey was floored by a heavy punch from the challenger, Wasiru Mohammed. Mohammed, declaring knockout victory for the challenger.

The referee’s decision did not go down well with Sackey’s cornermen who rushed on the referee in the ring while supporters of the champion damaged chairs and other items at the venue.

Meanwhile, Wasiru “Gyatabi” Mohammed has since been duly declared the winner of the bout and WBO Africa Super bantamweight champion.
