Louis van Gaal claims he would only return to management if he was offered the job at a big English club - so he could "get one over" Manchester United.

Van Gaal was in charge at Old Trafford for two years, but was sacked in the summer of 2016 despite winning the FA Cup in his final game in charge.

The 66-year-old has not managed since, and when asked by The Mirror if he would return to management, said: "I will probably not manage a club anymore.

"I would make one exception - if a big English club comes for me, then I would do it. Because then I can get the chance to get one over on Manchester United."

Van Gaal has previously said that he was unhappy with the manner of his departure from Old Trafford, and also suggested that Jose Mourinho was lined up by the Man Utd board to replace him while he was still in the job.

Mourinho was van Gaal's assistant at Barcelona between 1997 and 2000, and the Dutchman explained he did not blame his former colleague for his exit.

He said: "(Ed) Woodward (Man Utd executive vice-chairman) should have come to me and we could have worked on that.

"I have nothing against Jose."
