Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has backed Real Madrid to beat Barcelona in Sunday's El Clasico.

Barcelona will lock horns with Real Madrid at the Camp Nou on Sunday afternoon.

Julen Lopetegui has guided Real Madrid to their worst start to a season in 17 years. The Los Blancos have failed to win any of their last four La Liga matches including three losses.

However, Michael Essien believes Real Madrid are still capable of winning the El Clasico despite their recent poor run.

"Why not? The players are still there," Essien said. Madrid are still one of the biggest clubs in the world, and they still have the players. It’s such a shame that Ronaldo left but it's one of those things that can happen in football. They are going to go into the game and hopefully look to win the game."

Michael Essien joined Real Madrid in 2012 on a season-long loan deal reuniting him with his former manager at Chelsea, José Mourinho.
