Mixed Martial Art captain eyes gold medal for Ghana

Captain of the national Mixed Martial Art team, Theo Nelson is optimistic of winning gold medals for the country at the world championship in Las Vegas next year.

The 21-year-old UK-based athlete disclosed to primenewsghana that, he and other teammates are ready to take the world by storm in martial arts and would make the nation proud.

The recently appointed captain of the Black Warriors who was a former footballer said he has always dreamt of representing the country and winning medals.

“This is something I have dreamed about since I was watching the Black Stars play in the 2010 world cup. It is a dream come true. And I will do all in my power to assure that glory is brought to Ghana by winning gold medals at the world championship next year in Las Vegas,” he stated.

Nelson was selected to captain due to his experience in the game over the years and certain the amateur champion would impact positively on the national team.

“I will die for Ghana and make a mark by winning medals for Ghana and the world should watch out for Ghana,” he stated.

Highlighting on his experience he said, he had his first fight at age 17, and won by technical knock-out in the first minute.

“Ever since then I knew I was built to be a warrior and built to fight in this sport and has since been victorious in the game though I had to combine the sport with university education,” he stated.

On September 24, he said, he won his first ever championship fight by TKO in just over a minute and becoming Ghana's captain as a MMA welterweight is truly a honour which would motivate him to greater heights.

According to him, he takes a lot of inspiration from boxing legend Azumah Nelson as his role model, who he described as “Africa's greatest warrior”.
