Aside saying,“we shall ensure our sports development in hinged on the revival of school sports,” President Nana Akufo-Addo had no elaborate policies for sports development in Ghana in his State of the Nation address to Parliament on Tuesday.

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye after the SONA expressed his disappointment in the President for not properly tackling sports development in his address.

He said, sports was virtually left out in the President’s address and “I was hoping the President in his attempt to tackle health issues would mention sports as one of the ways to help prevent illnesses.”

He added that, sports is an important area in Ghana’s development as there are several youths that are interested in the area.

The issue of reviving school sports he said, is not enough for the entire sports fraternity but rather, adequate policies must be set aside for the growth of the sector.

In the New Patriotic Party’s manifesto, President Nana Addo mentioned that, they would build stadia in all the regions especially those without a stadium.

But to the surprise of many sports fanatics the issue never came up in the President’s address and the entire sector had just a mention.

Many also argued that, the situation would have been different if the Black Stars have won the recently held Africa Cup of Nation in Gabon.
