National 30km Road Baton Relay set for August 12

The 2017 National 30km Road Baton Relay has been launched in Accra with hundreds of Senior High School students across the country expected to participate in the event.

Scheduled for August 12, the event organized by Dreamland Sports Plus in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ghana Education Service, National Sports Authority (NSA) and Ghana Athletics Association is aimed at discovering talents to revive long distance racing in the country.

Speaking at the launch, Director General of the NSA, Robert Safo Mensah said his outfit would support the event to ensure that it achieved the aim of reviving the sport at the school level.

He added that Ghana can excel in the Commonwealth Games if such events are taken seriously and encouraged all schools across the 10 regions of the country to participate.

Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Elizabeth Sackey called on school children to take sports seriously because it had the potential to create jobs for many across the country.

She added that, the Baton Relay provides the opportunity to rekindle the spirit of sportsmanship which includes seeking the welfare of others, teamwork, professionalism as well as excellence.

Chief Executive Officer of Dreamland Sports Plus, Ola William said scholarships would be given to students that excelled in the competition.

The 30km race would begin at the Batsoona Total and would pass through Danquah Circle, Hansonic Junction. Dansoman Last Stop, Kwame Nkrumah Museum, end at the Independence Square.
