Pope John Senior High School and St Thomas Aquinas SHS made winning starts to the 2017/2018 Sprite Ball Championship overpowering Presbyterian Boys' Senior High School and St Johns School respectively on Thursday morning at the El Wak Stadium in Accra.

Pope John's and Presec, Legon teams were hoping to steal a march on their Group C rivals TI Ahmadiyya SHS and St Augustine's College when they took to the court but it was Pope John who notched their first win of the competition against the 2008 champions.

In Group B, Aquinas buoyed on by their vociferous supporters coasted to a 34-19 victory of St John's in the other tie with Prempeh College and Koforiduah Secondary Technical School expected to face off in the other Group B match.

The coach of Aquinas, Nicholas Achinboye praised his team for their performance and promised to work on their defence for their next matches.

He said: "We missed out last year but with a chap like Emmanuel Larbi in our ranks we are going for the trophy. He is a very good player and Ghana must watch out for him, he has everything; including crazy dribbles and dunks".
