Manchester United new boy Alexis Sanchez scored the second goal, his first for the club, in a routine 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

Alexis Sanchez scored his first Manchester United goal as they bounced back from defeat to Tottenham by cruising to a straightforward 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

Sanchez was United’s stand-out performer, roaming across the pitch to get on the ball and make things happen – and it was he who won the second half penalty from which he scored at the second attempt after Jonas Hossl had saved his initial strike.

On his home debut, Sánchez also won the ball for the move that led to Romelu Lukaku’s opening goal, and it was two points gained on Manchester City, their lead at the top of the league reduced to a mere 13 points.

This was the day that United marked the 60th anniversary of the Munich air disaster, which falls on Tuesday, and two survivors, Sir Bobby Charlton and Harry Gregg were both at Old Trafford. United had to wait for their opportunity to break down Huddersfield but it came eventually, although Sánchez was obliged to take some kicks along the way from an away team that fought for every ball.

An unusually bad-tempered half which ended with Sánchez, who had plenty of grievances, being booked for a foul on the Swiss midfielder Florent Hadergjonaj. Yet by that stage, United had never overwhelmed Huddersfield as they threatened to do so in the early stages. There was a chance for Jesse Lingard who got through on goal with the help of a ricochet. Sánchez turned onto his right foot on 27 minutes and forced a save from Jonas at his right-hand post.Â
