Muskan Jan, 14, woke up early on Thursday morning with a smile on her face as she had passed class 9 examination with flying colours a day ago.

She was excited to join the 10th standard.

After having her early morning tea she asked her father to get her books for class 10 that day only. Private winter tuitions were in her mind too as class 10 was a “challenge” and she had promised to score high in the exam.

But a bullet that hit her head at her home at Wangud-Qaimoh during an exchange of fire between militants and government forces in the area dashed all her dreams.

She had slipped into coma after the doctors operated upon her at SKIMS. She succumbed to her injuries on Saturday morning.

Muskan was buried in the graveyard located next to her school and her funeral was held in the compound of the school.

A police official had said that militants fired several shots at an army camp stationed in a part of Rice Research Institute of Sher-e-Kashmir Agriculture University’s (SKAUST) campus at nearby Khudwani on Thursday morning.

“The army soldiers retaliated, leading to a brief exchange of fire. Muskan was unfortunately caught in crossfire and sustained bullet injury,” he said.

She was removed to a sub-district hospital in Qaimoh, where doctors referred her to SKIMS, Srinagar, for treatment.

“Muskan was sitting on the window of her house. In the meantime, we heard gunfire but it was not so loud,” said her father GhulamNabiWani, a scrap dealer.

He said that as the firing was on, Muskan fell down.

“We couldn’t understand what happened to her,” Wani said.

The camp, according to a police official, is located on the rear side of campus and has a residential locality behind. He said the militants fired from that locality.

The house of Muskan at Wangund-Qaimoh and the camp at Khudwani are at least 700 meters apart.

“She was brilliant in studies and had high ambitions in her life. Everybody loved her for her jolly nature. I would never ever have imagined that I would have to shoulder her coffin and offer her funeral prayers at her school,” said Wani.

Muskan’s mother Yasmeena Jan is in shock and has not uttered a word since she learned about the death of her daughter.

The couple is now survived by a son, a class 12 student.
