3 EC staff, student remanded over stolen BVDs, laptops

Three staff of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana and a student have been remanded for stealing Biometric Verification Devices and laptops belonging to the commission.

The three EC staff Philip Tetteh, Benjamin Fienyi, and Joseph Blackson Adamadze have been charged with conspiracy to steal and stealing.

The student, Clifford Yeboah was also charged with dishonestly receiving.

According to the prosecution, in March 2023, EC engaged its casual workers and security personnel to move some materials from its old Head Office warehouse at Ridge to one of its warehouses at Spintex.

The police said Benjamin Fienyi and Joseph Blackson planned to steal some of the items.

Joseph stole an HP printer from one of the kit boxes and handed it over to Benjamin.

He said, Benjamin also stole three BVDs and printer chargers.

Philip Tetteh, on the other hand, stole three HP laptop computers from the kit boxes and gave them to Clifford Yeboah to keep and repair for him.

The prosecutor continued that on March 9, 2024, the IT officers noticed the missing items while conducting routine maintenance on the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) Kits.

They lodged a complaint with National Security and in the course of the investigation, they arrested all the accused persons.

Upon further search, the National Security officials retrieved all the items from the accused.

Meanwhile, all four have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Circuit Court at Dansoman has adjourned the case to April 29, 2024.

This comes after the Electoral Commission revealed that it has interdicted officials allegedly responsible for the disappearance of five BVDs.

According to the Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr Serebour Quaicoe, they had also handed the officers over to the police for further investigations.
