New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for the Assin Central Constituency in the Central Region, Kennedy Agyapong has revealed what might be the actual reason for sudden dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr Stephen Opuni.

According to him, Dr Opuni had, prior to his dismissal, been sneaking into his office to shred documents believed to be related to questionable contracts he signed while in office.

"Opuni went to his office on Tuesday at 1 am and started shredding documents. He again went there on Wednesday at 2 am to do the same thing and I will expose him. Why is he doing that, is it because he knew he would be sacked” he asked, adding that, "what he forgot was that he already took a snapshot of those documents and we will deal with him drastically".

Dr Opuni was fired by President Akufo-Addo last week through a letter signed by the Executive Secretary to the president Nana Asante Bediatuo which asked him to vacate post not later than 5:00 pm Friday, January 13, 2017.

Though the tenure of Dr Opuni who had been at post since November 2013, has been characterised by a lot of controversies and allegations of corruption with the latest being that he had sold some of COCOBOD's cocoa beans and used the proceeds to support the NDC's campaign for the 2016 elections, the manner in which he was sacked received some criticism.

But speaking on Adom TV's 'Badwam' Morning Show, Mr Agyapong stated that Dr Opuni's dismissal was just the beginning of his troubles as he was personally going to ensure that former CEO of COCOBOD goes to jail.

For him, Dr Opuni may have been removed from office alright, but his "deals" have cost the country dearly and therefore “it is time we make him pay for his bad deeds”.

“Opuni will go to jail and I will make sure he pays dearly for his crimes. If we refuse to jail him, Ghanaians will vote against us in the next four years and so we need to get corrupt officials like him away from the country” he said.
