President Nana Akufo-Addo on Tuesday delivered his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) to parliament.

The president touched his plan to improve the economy, develop infrastructure and transform healthcare in the country.

Akufo-Addo announced that his free senior high school education programme would take of in September.

He also announced the restoration of nurses trainee allowances.

He said he inherited a poor economy from former President John Mahama, something he was typified by high public debt and slow GDP growth to back his claim that the economy is challenged.

He said the former administration had 10 times more financial resources than other administrations, but still borrowed heavily, including signing up to a $940 million IMF programme.

Akufo-Addo said the development had caused Ghana's public debt to balloon to 74% of GDP, however he vowed to turn things around and create jobs for Ghanaians.

Here are five powerful quotes from the speech:

1. I am in an enviable position of being the first Ghanaian leader to be able to draw some experience from the three living former presidents.

2. I am in a great hurry to deal with the problems we face as a country.

3. I will not allow this economy to collapse under my watch.

4. I was not elected by the overwhelming majority of the Ghanaian people to complain, I was elected to get things done.

5. The new Ghana is a Ghana beyond aid.
