President Nana Akufo-Addo has commended the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrissu, saying that there is a bright political future ahead of him.

The president said this on Tuesday when he delivered his maiden State of the Nation Address to Parliament.

"My compliment goes to the new minority leader, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, who announced himself on the national stage when he came here in my last term in the house. It is clear that he has an important future in Ghanaian politics," he said.

Akufo-Addo also commended the majority leader, Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu.

"I commend also the Majority Leader, my contemporary in this House who can now put his extensive experience of parliament to use as leader of the house and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs," he said.

Delivering his speech, the president painted a bleak picture of the economy during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) to parliament.

He said the economy he inherited from the John Mahama administration was in doldrums, something he said was typified by high public debt and slow GDP growth.

He said the former administration had 10 times more financial resources than other administrations, but still borrowed heavily, including signing up to a $940 million IMF programme.

Akufo-Addo said the development had caused Ghana's public debt to balloon to 74% of GDP.

The president, however, said that he was not elected to complain, but rather to fix the problems confronting the country.

"I was not elected to complain, I was elected to get things done," he said, vowing to fix the economy and create jobs for Ghanaians.
