Skipper Asamoah Gyan's 21st minute goal was enough to beat Mali and send Ghana to the quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

Gyan scored his eight AFCON goal to become Ghana's leading top scorer in the Nations Cup.

The victory sends the Stars into the quarter finals alongside Senegal with just a game to spare.

The Black Stars dominated the game in the first half and managed to hold onto their lead till recess with Christian Atsu threatening the goal area of the opponent in several occasions.

But just like the first game, the Stars turned what was supposed to be a comfortable win into a nervous end as they allowed the Malians to control the pace of the game in the second half.

It took two brilliant blank saves from Razak Briamah in the dying minutes of the game to secure the three points for Ghana.

Thomas Partey was once again inspirational in midfield with Jordan Ayew also lifting up his game as he was heavily criticized after the first game.

The Stars would play their next game against Egypt next week in an attempt to keep the top spot as they have already qualified to the next stage.
