The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has cautioned consumers against food promotions before, during and after the Christmas festivities.

Acting Director-Inspectorate Division of the FDA, Maria Aba Lovelace-Johnson said most food products offered as part of promotions during the Yuletide could be near expiration.

"We are doing a major operation, we are all out there just looking at all of these things because some unscrupulous people just wait till then and just do the buy one, get three free and all of that. We do not want that and even those who do the defacing of the best before date and give new dates.

"The fact that you have seen something and they say buy one take one free doesn't mean that if you have a family of four and the things have two days to expire, how can you buy... how are you going to consume them before the best before date?" Miss Maria questioned.

Miss Lovelace-Johnson said major operations are being carried out daily to get rid of substandard consumables on market shelves.

She added that the FDA has instituted some interventions at the ports and land borders to guard against the importation of unwholesome food products.

Miss Maria Aba Lovelace-Johnson further urged consumers to be vigilant when shopping for food products during the Christmas festivities.
