The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has served notice that this year’s ban on noise making begins on Monday 8 May and ends on Thursday 8 June.
The ban precedes the celebration of the annual Homowo festival of the Ga State.
A statement from the AMA asked that all forms of worship be limited to the premises of churches/mosques and noise levels be at the barest minimum.
The Assembly has also urged religious bodies and traditional authorities to ensure decorum and restrain their followers from making derogatory and inflammatory remarks about the beliefs and practices of one another.
The Statement continued that the ban affects loud speakers outside the premises of churches, mosques, and pubs. Roadside evangelists are also to cease their activities during this period.
The statement clarified that “Apart from an identifiable task force which consists of AMA personnel, the Police Service and representative from the traditional councils with tags, no other person or group of persons should be seen or found enforcing the abatement of noise in the metropolis.â€
This years’ ban on noising making has generated some controversy after the Ga State announced burial cannot take place during the period, it was hitherto allowed. This is likely to create some tension with the Muslim community because Islam requires the dead to be buried within 24 hours.
