The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) of Ghana is upgrading its international travel documents to enhance their global acceptance and meet international standards.

As a signatory to the UN’s Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, the DVLA is addressing challenges faced by Ghanaian drivers whose current International Driver’s Licenses (IDLs) and International Vehicle Permits (IVPs) have occasionally been rejected by some foreign countries.

Key Changes: Implementation of Biometric Standards

To ensure worldwide recognition and security, the DVLA will be launching Biometric International Driver’s Licenses and Biometric International Vehicle Permits.

These new documents will include a bio-data page to fully comply with ISO (International Organization for Standardization) specifications. This strategic upgrade aims to establish a modern, secure, and globally verifiable standard for Ghanaian drivers and vehicles traveling abroad.

Rollout Timeline

The issuance of the new biometric documents will commence at all DVLA stations across Ghana starting in 2026.

This initiative is set to equip Ghanaians living abroad with international driving and vehicle documentation that adheres to the highest globally recognized standards.
