Ghana and its Eastern neighbour Togo are to deepen co-operation in various sectors of their economies to boost development.
The two states have agreed to join forces in addressing common issues such as security, immigration, agriculture and water, health, trade, digital economy, environment, energy, and transport.
A communiqué issued at the end of a 3-day official visit to Togo by President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said both leaders have indicated their willingness to activate “the High level permanent joint Commission of cooperation between the two countries.â€
On Wednesday, the two Presidents visited the Joint Border Post at Noepe and Akanu. The post is yet to function three years after commissioning.
Ministers responsible on both sides were instructed to speed up the interconnection of Customs IT systems so as to operationalize the post, which is expected to aid the free movement of people and goods across the Ghana/Togo border.
Presidents Akufo-Addo and Gnassingbe also expressed their determination to strengthen actions to combat illegal timber trade, and tasked their respective ministers to put in place appropriate mechanisms to achieve this.
The two countries renewed their commitment to ensuring the completion of the joint hydroelectric dam project in Juale. This will enable the electrification of communities along the borders of Ghana and Togo.
At the end of his visit, President Akufo-Addo expressed his deepest gratitude to President Faure Gnassingbe for the warm and fraternal welcome extended to him and his delegation.
President Gnassingbe accepted an invitation for a State visit to Ghana.
