The Ghana Institute of Journalism, GIJ has appealed for more support from their alumni for the 60th-anniversary celebration.

According to the institute, though some alumni have supported the celebration, the school needs more funds to make the celebration a success.

The Ghana Institute of Journalism, GIJ turns 60 tomorrow. As the institute celebrates its diamond jubilee concerns have been raised about the lack of involvement of the university's alumni in the celebration.

In an interview with Radio Ghana, Chairperson of the 60th-anniversary planning committee, Dr Lawrencia Agyapong said the alumni has to do more to promote their alma mater.

''We have had quite some alumni who have been very helpful in the celebration but we will want our alumni to do more. We cannot talk about any celebration of our institution without looking at our past and for GIJ our past is our alumni so we really wish the alumni will do more. This is the opportunity for them to do more.''

''With every celebration, we have to be financially prudent. When we don't see too many of the alumni coming forward to support it becomes quite difficult. We are hoping that with the grande durbar and fundraising dinner and gala we will see the alumni taking their place in this esteemed institution because we cannot tell the story of GIJ without our alumni so we need them and we want them to understand that the fact that they have completed their education here does not mean they have ended their relationship with the institution''.

GIJ was formally called School of Journalism which was a department at the Accra Technical Institute now Accra Technical University.

The school had Mr Richard McMillan who was then due for retirement as the Director of the British Information Services in Ghana as its first principal and journalism tutor.
