The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has appealed to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to exercise compassion in handling the disciplinary case involving a staff nurse, Ms. Bernice Aboagye, who was queried for allegedly making unprofessional comments about the Minister on social media.

In a statement signed by Tony Goodman, Head of Health Training Institutions and Spokesperson for the Ministry, Mr. Akandoh commended the GHS for upholding the tenets of professionalism and enforcing its Code of Conduct but urged the Service to “temper justice with mercy” in addressing the matter.

According to the Minister, both he and the government welcome constructive criticism and diverse opinions as part of efforts to promote openness and tolerance in public discourse.

“The Ministry has no objection to demonstrations or legitimate expressions of frustration,” the statement noted, adding that such actions are a constitutional right of citizens. However, it cautioned against the use of abusive language or acts of indiscipline during such engagements.

Mr. Akandoh further encouraged health workers to express their opinions responsibly and respectfully, emphasizing that mutual respect contributes to the healthy development of the health sector.

The Ministry also used the opportunity to remind all health professionals to be circumspect in their public communications and social media engagements to safeguard the image and integrity of the profession.
