Reports of the death of a nine-week-old baby at the St Gregory Hospital at Kasoa in the Central Region due to the inability of his parents to pay an amount of GH¢533 for an oxygen machine hit the nation Wednesday, April 11 which doubles as World Health Day.

Parents of the baby named Prosper, in an interview with Joy News' Joojo Cobbinah, revealed that the medical doctor who had been attending to him pulled out the plug from the oxygen machine because they could not afford to pay the GH¢533 required to keep their son alive.

According to them, Prosper was born on January 19, 2018, fell sick and was taken to the hospital on March 5, after which he died three weeks later.

Madam Sefakor narrated that she realized her child was was not breathing well weeks after he was born. She added that after some tests were done, St Gregory Hospital admitted him with the intention of transferring the case to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital later. Little Prosper was given blood and kept on the oxygen machine because he could still not breathe well.

But when the parents could not pay for the treatment in due time before the transfer to Korle Bu, the doctor took action.

"That Saturday, the Doctor came and asked me that if I had heard from my husband about the bills. I told him I hadn't heard from him yet. Then he removed the oxygen plug...I cried at the hospital, but it was too late," the baby's mother recounted.

Meanwhile, Hospital authorities are yet to speak on the issue explaining they are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of the baby.
