The Ghana Airport Company Limited has introduced an aerobridge for the first time in Ghana at the Kotoka International Airport, KIA ahead of the official opening of the new Terminal 3 in August 2018.
The Ghana Airport Company with the aim to make Ghana a regional aviation hub based on international standard has procured 7 aerobridges.
An aerobridge is an enclosed, movable connector which extends from an airport terminal gate to an airplane, allowing passengers to board and disembark without having to go outside.
According to Primenewsghana's source at the Ghana Airport Company, the newly built Terminal 3 at the KIA is expected to handle up to five million passengers a year, with an expansion potential of up to 6.5 million passengers which is three times the size of the current Terminal 2.
At a very busy hour, the terminal 3 will have the capacity to process up to about 1,250 passengers. A fully automated baggage handling system will also handle 3,500 bags an hour.
The Terminal 3 will also hold a large retail and commercial area, three business lounges, six fixed links and seven air bridges expandable to eight, and parking space with the capacity to handle more than 700 cars.
 Primenewsghana's source also stated that at the Departure level of the Terminal 3, it has 56 check-in desks, 30 passport control centres and eight security lanes. Also at the Arrival level, it has 24 immigration counters, four e-gate positions [expandable to eight] and four reclaim devices.
However, Primenewsghana's sources at the Ghana Airport Company clarified that when the Terminal 3 is officially opened, it will serve international flights and the current terminal 2 will serve local and Regional flights.

In a related development, Emirates’ iconic A380 aircraft will operate a one-off flight to Kotoka International Airport, Accra, on Tuesday 2nd October, as the global airline joins local authorities in celebrating the opening of the airport’s new Terminal three (3).
The airline’s flagship double-decker will become the first-ever scheduled A380 service to Ghana, with Emirates partnering with the airport to test its operations and infrastructure to accommodate an A380 service.
The one-off A380 flight EK787 from Dubai, will arrive at 11:35 hours and be on the ground for more than six hours before it returns to Dubai as flight EK788 departing at 17:50 hours.
