VRA ends controlled spillage from Akosombo Dam

The Volta River Authority (VRA) announced the controlled spillage of excess water from the Akosombo Dam which began on September 15, 2023, has ended.

The VRA made this announcement in a release issued on October 30, 2023.

 

"The Volta River Authority (VRA) wishes to inform the public, particularly residents living along the Lower Volta River and its environs that the controlled spillage from the Akosombo dam, which began on September 15, 2023, has ended," a statement read.

VRA expressed appreciation for the support received from government agencies and stakeholders for the affected communities.

The exercise, which began on September 15, this year, was intensified after about three weeks, to protect the integrity of the dams.

Thousands of residents in nine communities along the lower volta were seriously affected by the spillage.

Houses, farms, businesses, schools, medical facilities, cemeteries, places of convenience among others were submerged during the spillage.

Many residents in the affected areas who have been evacuated are being accommodated in schools, churches and some temporary structures.
