The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has interacted with executives of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in Accra as part of his campaign for the December 7 elections in Ghana.
Mahama acknowledged the pivotal role of the GPRTU as the largest transport union in Ghana, handling approximately 90% of road transportation and serving as a crucial mobiliser for drivers and transport owners. He expressed his deep appreciation for their significant contributions to the nation's transportation sector.
Reiterating the NDC's commitment to its past initiatives, Mahama expressed his regret that certain ideas, such as a driver pension scheme, have yet to be realised.
Reaffirming his unwavering dedication to the welfare of commercial drivers, Mahama promised that, if elected, his administration would redouble efforts to establish a comprehensive pension scheme, ensuring their social security in their retirement years. This commitment is a testament to his deep concern for their well-being and his belief in the importance of their role in the nation's development.
Mahama, envisioning a future of prosperous transport terminals and lorry parks, proposed the establishment of mutually beneficial partnerships between the GPRTU, the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), or private investors.
He explained that these partnerships could lead to the modernisation and maintenance of these facilities, with the revenue from their management shared, promising a brighter future for the transport industry.
Recognising the importance of safe driving, Mahama also pledged to institute a drivers' day to celebrate and appreciate long years of accident-free driving at the district, regional, and national levels. He believes this will motivate other drivers.
These remarks by Mahama are in line with his vision to "Build the Ghana we want together," and the engagement with the GPRTU is one of many such interactions aimed at outlining his policies and initiatives to the electorate.
As the election draws nearer, similar engagements are expected to continue as political parties intensify their campaigns.
