Mohammed Salisu's Southampton on Sunday played a scoring stalemate with Manchester United at the Saint Mary's Stadium.

The Ghanaian defender was resolute in the heart of defence as his outfit held United to a 1-1 in the Premier League match week two encounter.

Salisu made important stops to keep his side in the game. He made two interventions within the opening 15 minutes that proved vital for his side in keeping United at bay.

He made a goal-line clearance within the first 5 minutes before blocking Paul Pogba's shot inside the box to deny Manchester United the lead on the 13th-minute mark.

An own goal from Fred put Southampton in front on the half-hour mark, and it took the equaliser from Greenwood in the second half for United to take a share of the points.

Despite Salisu's impressive performances for the Saints since last season, he is yet to make his Black Stars debut. He was not named in Charles Kwablan Akonnor's recent call for the World Cup 2022 qualifers against Ethiopia and South Africa next month.

According to Akonnor, he has spoken to one of the people close to the defender and the same statement was reiterated that 'he is not ready.'

“With Salisu, he made that comment [that he’ll inform us of his readiness to play for Ghana when the time comes]. I’m not the one who made it. He said when he’s ready,” the coach said on Friday.

“When a player makes a comment like that, then there should be an issue. Having said that, I’ve had the chance to communicate with one of his people, and the lesson is that we’ll have to wait until he’s ready. And that’s it,” he added.
