Black Stars’ first deputy coach, Ibrahim Tanko, has been given an additional responsibility to handle the national Olympic team, the Black Meteors.

Tanko’s appointment was sealed on Tuesday following a fruitful discussion with the Normalisation Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The former Ghanaian international replaces Yusif Abubakar, who suddenly passed away last week after a short illness while preparing to assume duty with the Meteors.

Confirming his appointment in a chat with Graphic Online on Wednesday, the affable trainer said he was ready to help the Meteors to achieve laurels for the nation, despite the inadequate preparation time.

Coach Tanko will be assisted by another former Ghanaian international, Michael Osei.

The Meteors are due to host neighbouring Togo in an Africa U-23 Championship first round first leg qualifier at the Baba Yara Stadium on December 18. The return leg is scheduled for Lome on December 22.

In view of that, a 23-man squad has been invited to begin camping at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram on Thursday.

The Meteors will have two more hurdles to clear after Togo in order to qualify for the third edition of the Africa U-23 Nations Cup in Egypt next year.

The first three teams from the Egypt Championship will qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
