Asante Kotoko CEO Nana Yaw Amponsah has reiterated that despite his outfit going trophyless, they were the best team in the 2020/2021 season.

Kotoko finished as runners-up to champions Hearts of Oak in last season's Ghana Premier League and also exited the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage with the Phobians eventually winning that competition also.

When asked how he felt losing all those titles to his rivals Nana Yaw Amponsah said "it is painful."

He believes the Porcupine Warriors would have been crowned winners of the 2020/2021 Ghana Premier League if they had played their home games at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

"It was really painful I never thought we were going to lose Hearts of Oak. I mean we were the most in-form team even though people will say all manner of things. If you look at Kotoko last season I still maintain that Kotoko was the best team," Nana Yaw Amponsah said on Starr FM.

One will say there are no trophies to show for it. But if Hearts of Oak or any other team had gone through what we went last it would have been difficult for them."

In a related development,  Nana Yaw Amponsah has revealed the club has not taken a decision on the future of head coach Mariano Barreto.

Following a trophyless season reports indicated that Barreto will not continue with the Porcupines next season.

In an interview, Nana Yaw Amponsah stated that a decision will soon be made on the future of their head coach.

"Management and the board are discussing whether the coach should stay or not," he said.

Barreto was appointed in March 2021 replacing Maxwell Konadu who was sacked in December 2020 after just five matches into the season.

He guided Asante Kotoko to finish second place on the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League log with 57 points.
