World number one Serena Williams has equalled Steffi Graf's open era grand slam record after winning the women's singles title at Wimbledon.

Germany's Angelique Kerber was the vanquished as the American star beat her 7-5, 6-3 on Centre Court telling the BBC afterwards "It makes the victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it."

“Thank you guys for being here to see number 22. This court definitely feels like home” were the words she had for the spectators.

Having equaled Steffi Graf's record of winning 22 grand slam singles titles, Williams acknowledged she’s taught about the great feat for a while.

"It's been incredibly difficult not to think about.

"I had a couple of tries this year and lost to great opponents.

"That makes the victory even sweeter; to know how hard I worked for it.

"This is awesome.

"I love playing out here" she added.

Despite the loss, 28-yeal-old Kerber stated: "It's always an honour to play against her and it's the best feeling to play here on Centre Court."

At the age of 34, Serena Williams is the oldest woman to win a major title.

Celebrities including Jay-Z and Beyonce witnessed Serena’s grand victory.
