Manchester City strolled to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League after a 7-0 evisceration of a hapless Schalke side to go through with an emphatic 10-2 aggregate.Â
Early exchanges
Manchester City having won the first leg they were tipped to progress easily to the quarterfinals of the tournament while Schalke faced an uphill battle of overturning a one-goal deficit away from home. Schalke started the first 20 minutes well managed to keep City at bay.
Aguero goal
City finally got going when they awarded a penalty after Bruma was ruled to have fouled Bernardo Silva as the latter tried to get on the end of an exquisite chipped pass by Gundogan. Aguero held his nerve to convert the ball in the middle of the goal with a Panenka penalty in the 35th minute.Â
Aguero brace
Pep Guardiola's men doubled the advantage in three minutes later when Raheem Sterling managed to outmuscle his marker before his cut back towards the onrushing Aguero who stayed on his feet despite intense defensive pressure to score past Fahrmann, with the goal awarded after VAR check.
Sane goal
City went into the break with a three-goal advantage when Zinchenko slid in a pin-point through ball towards Leroy Sane who sped past McKennie as Leroy Sane scored his 14th goal of the season to put his side 6-2 ahead on aggregate and score past his former side.
Sterling goal
The tie was put to bed in the 57th minute when Sane switched play out on the other wing and found Sterling in the Schalke box, who hit first-time as his effort flew past Fahrmann and into the back of the net. VAR is called for again after Sterling was alleged to have been offside, but the goal stood.
Bernardo goal
City were having a field day and got their fifth in the 71st minute when Bernardo Silva capped off an excellent team move that started with Foden who played in Zinchenko out on the wing who then passed it to Leroy Sane as the German winger’s subsequently cut the ball back to find the onrushing Bernardo Silva who drove it low into the bottom left-corner of Fahrmann’s goal.
Foden goal
The Premier League champions were not taking their foot off the pedal as they added a sixth in the 78th minute when Leroy Sane danced around his namesake Salif before threading a cute pass towards Phil Foden, who calmly rounded Fahrmann and slid the ball into the back the empty net to bag his first European goal.
Jesus goal
The scoreline got even more embarrassing for Schalke in the 84th minute when Bernardo Silva found Jesus in space before he curled a low effort which slid underneath Fahrmann’s outstretched arms and into the back of the net.Â
