The US Democratic Party members have worn kente on their official dresses in solidarity with Africans and in protest against Donald Trump’s comment describing Haiti and Africa as a “shithole”.

At Donald Trump’s first state of the nation’s address on Tuesday, January 30 to give an account of his one year of stewardship, Democrats were seen wearing locally produced African kente fabric as a scarf and a tie.

President Trump has been reported to have described Africa as “shithole” during a meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers at the White House on Thursday, January 11, 2018.

His comment was condemned by most African countries including the African Union.

The African Union, AU, is demanding a retraction and an apology from President Donald Trump for his comment which described Africa as a “shithole”.

A statement from AU said they are concerned about the continuing and growing trend from the US administration towards Africa and the people of African descent to denigrate the continent and the people of colour.

“Is extremely appalled at and strongly condemns the outrageous, racist and xenophobic remarks attributed to the President of the US as reported by the media.”

The AU expressed its solidarity with the people of Haiti and others that have been similarly denigrated.

The kente is a traditionally woven cloth on a narrow horizontal wood structure called a loom. A heddle is an integral part of a loom. Each thread in the warp passes through a heddle, which is used to separate the warp threads for the passage of the weft.
