Minister of Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea is expected to appear before Parliament today to brief the House on measures being taken by the ministry to deal with flooding across the country.
The Minority in Parliament, last week invited the Minister of Works and Housing to answer to the steps government was taking to reduce the impact of floods in Accra.
Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Governs Kwame Agbodza, speaking on the floor of parliament, said, "the recent rains in Accra, if it is anything to go by, should be a wake-up call to government to put in the necessary measures to avert the perennial flooding in the capitalâ€.
Over a thousand people have been displaced and properties destroyed in separate flooding in Eastern, Upper West, Northern and Greater Accra regions.
In the Northern Regional town of Bole alone, NADMO estimates that more than a thousand people have been displaced.
The Minority has criticized government for its unpreparedness for the rains and its attendant challenges because not much funds have been budgeted to deal with flood-related shocks.
Minority Spokesperson on Works and Housing, Sampson Ahi, speaking to Joy News said the flooding situation is more or less becoming a national security concern.
“Anytime it rains people lose properties, it cannot continue like that. This government is not actually keen on addressing this flood problem, if you look at the budget not much was allocated for the containment of flood problem in the country. Last year it was GHC38,000 and this year I don’t think it’s more than GHC 50,000. This government is not prepared, they’re just living at the mercy of God.â€
