President John Dramani Mahama on Friday reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s security architecture, announcing a comprehensive retooling and infrastructure expansion programme for the Ghana Armed Forces, the Police Service and other security agencies.
The President, in his message on the State of the Nation (SONA) before Parliament, said the government had prioritised security sector reforms, logistics enhancements, and improved welfare as part of efforts to safeguard national stability and territorial integrity.
As Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, he said ongoing investments in the military were aimed at improving operational readiness in the face of emerging regional security threats, particularly violent extremism in the Sahel.
The Government had intensified logistical support to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), including the acquisition and refurbishment of essential equipment to enhance land, air and maritime operations.
President Mahama said infrastructure development across military barracks and training institutions was progressing steadily, with renewed focus on accommodation, medical facilities and general welfare of officers and men.
He indicated that strengthening border security remained a key priority, with enhanced deployment and surveillance systems along Ghana’s northern frontiers to prevent infiltration and transnational crimes.
On internal security, President Mahama mentioned a retooling programme the Government had embarked on for the Ghana Police Service to improve crime-fighting capacity.
He said additional operational vehicles, communication equipment and protective gear were being supplied to boost rapid response capabilities nationwide.
The President said improvement in police visibility and response time formed part of broader reforms to enhance public confidence in law enforcement institutions.
He also referenced capacity-building initiatives and training programmes aimed at professionalising the security services and aligning operations with democratic accountability and human rights standards.
Government, he said, remained committed to deepening inter-agency collaboration among the Police, Armed Forces, Immigration Service, Customs Division and intelligence agencies to respond effectively to organised crime, cyber threats and cross-border insecurity.
President Mahama reiterated the critical importance of national security to economic recovery and social development, adding: “A secure Ghana is indispensable to investment, job creation and sustainable development.”
He assured Parliament that government would continue to allocate resources strategically to ensure the nation’s security agencies remained well-equipped, disciplined and responsive to contemporary challenges.
