The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has launched the regional capital street lighting rehabilitation project to install modern, energy-efficient lighting systems in major streets and ceremonial areas across the nation.

The project, expected to be completed within six months, aims to enhance public safety, boost economic activity, and support the country’s green transition agenda in regional and district capitals.

The initiative involves two categories: the first covers the rehabilitation and installation of streetlights, while the second focuses on solar all-in-one installations.

It is a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, the Regional Ministers, and other stakeholders to ensure all major roads are adequately lit for visibility.

Speaking at the launch ceremony in Accra on Wednesday, the Deputy Minister of Energy, Mr Richard Gyan-Mensah, explained that solar all-in-one installations would target areas lacking sufficient electricity infrastructure, especially in district areas. He stressed that both projects would run concurrently.

As part of the project, the ministry is providing Municipal and District Assemblies with some streetlights to target areas that the main project may not cover. “The solar streetlights we have now are going to cover all districts in the country, and major rehabilitation will cover all regional capitals. Every regional capital and ceremonial route will be covered,” Mr Gyan-Mensah explained.

He added that the ministry has partnered with the Ghana Police Service to prevent theft and vandalism, which have been recurring challenges. He urged the police, security agencies, and the public to strengthen surveillance and enforce the law. The ministry will monitor the project for two years before handing it over to the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies.Ghana travel guide

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mrs Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, highlighted that the project aligns with the government’s national transformation agenda and the vision of a 24-hour economy — an economy that remains active, productive, and vibrant beyond daylight hours.

She called on contractors to carry out the project professionally and on time, while urging the Assemblies to safeguard the installations once completed. “My office, together with the Ministry of Energy and other relevant institutions, will monitor progress to ensure value for money and excellence in delivery,” Mrs Ocloo noted.
