The High Commissioner of Canada to Ghana, Dr. Heather Cameron has advised girls in the Junior and Senior high schools to take a keen interest in the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, STEM, in order to pursue jobs in related fields in future.
According to her, it is in pursuit of this objective that this year, the High Commission decided to host the event which took the form of a career fair showcased women role models in STEM-related fields and also provided an opportunity for over three hundred young girls and their parents to interact and ask questions about career paths, opportunities, and advantages of choosing a profession in STEM.
Dr. Heather Cameron said the event was to help girls develop the interest by expanding their career horizon towards a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics(STEM).
''To support this vision that Ghana has defined for itself, Canada believes that advancing and empowering women and girls is incredibly important and effective way to eliminate poverty,to achieve sustainable development.There are few women in professional sectors despite the wealth of our opportunities. Women and girls don't limit yourselves, think of all the opportunities that are open to you especially those through Science and Technology,''Dr Heather Cameron.
Over 300 junior and senior high school students in the region attended the Career Fair on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics related fields in Takoradi.
The Deputy Western Regional Minister, Gifty Eugenia Kusi said school going age children in the country have no reason or whatsoever to fail. According to her, every child has the opportunity to go to school and excel in view of the accessibility, infrastructural development and that basic and senior high school education is free.
