The top hierarchy of the National Democratic Congress [NDC] has forwarded to the party's disciplinary committee, a petition filed by some members of the party seeking the expulsion of former Attorney General Martin Amidu, for dragging the name of the party into disrepute and public ridicule with his actions and utterances.

The petitioners Evans Amankwa and Abigail Elorm Mensah say their action is to defend and protect the NDC as required of members under Articles 45 and 47 of the NDC Constitution.

Article 45 demands of members to defend, protect and be loyal to the party at all times, while 47 outlines the processes to file complaints against the conduct of a member deemed to have violated the party's constitution.

According to the petitioners, the former Attorney General has on several occasions conducted himself in a manner that has brought the party into disrepute and public ridicule and also weakened the unity and cohesion within the NDC in breach of articles 46[8] and 45.

In a response to the petition, Martin Amidu has said his actions do not ridicule the party as being alleged, and he will always defend the constitution of Ghana rather than succumb to a subordinate constitution of the NDC.

"The NDC is a political party and cannot use its subordinate Constitution to gag citizens from the exercise of their constitutional rights to speak against unconstitutional conduct and actions of a Government even if it supported it to come to power."

The Deputy General Secretary of NDC Koku Anyidoho has confirmed the party has received the petition and forwarded it to the disciplinary committee for necessary disciplinary procedures to begin. According to him, the petitioners are members of good standing who feel the actions of Martin Amidu have violated the soul and spirit of the NDC.

He said all parties involved will be given a fair hearing before the Disciplinary Committee arrived at its decision.
