GFA urge clubs to avoid night travels after AshantiGold robbery attack

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) in a statement has advised clubs to avoid travelling at night after games.

The caution follows Ashanti Gold SC’s ordeal on Sunday night while returning from Accra to Obuasi after the 2-1 defeat to Heart of Oak.

AshantiGold in said statement the robbers shot three bullets at the front bulletproof glass of their team bus but the driver meandered his way through a terrible scene of gunshots and no individual sustained any injuries.

"We got attacked by armed robbers on our way back from Accra at Assin Endwa, a statement on Monday read.

"The robbers shot three bullets at the front bulletproof glass as the team driver meandered his way through a terrible scene of gunshots."

"Thankfully, no individual sustained any injuries. The entire team is currently safe in Obuasi."

Reacting to the incident, the GFA said clubs should do their best to avoid travelling at night and where need be they should 'engage the security services or seek security advice before making trips.'

 

A GFA statement said: The Ghana Football Association (GFA) received with shock the unfortunate armed robbery attack on the team bus of Ashantigold SC which was returning the Ghana Premier League Matchweek 21 match against Accra Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Though we are pleased with news that all players and technical staff are all safely in Obuasi, we call on Security authorities to beef up security on our highways to avoid such incidents.

We urge travelling clubs to avoid night travels, and where required engage the security services or seek security advice before making trips.

The GFA will further engage the Ghana Police Service on providing adequate security support to teams when they travel across the country."
