Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has said the Ghana can only qualify to the next World Cup in Russia if Egypt decides not to go.

After securing six points in two games and beating Ghana as well, Egypt are certainly on the path of making it to the next World Cup.

But Coach Avram Grant is still optimistic the Stars would qualify despite having only a point after two games and behind Egypt with five points.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, Appiah believes it would take something special for Ghana to secure qualification to Russia 2018.

He admitted that it would be a very difficult task for the Stars to make it considering the exploits of the Egyptians.

“This is football and anything can happen but we have to be sincere to ourselves this is very difficult,” Appiah stated.

He added that “the only way we can qualify is if Egypt decided that they did not want to go the World Cup.”

According to him the entire country would have to wait and see what happens but “as it stands, it would be very difficult for Ghana to qualify.”

The Black Stars failed to get the maximum three points at home in their first game against Uganda in order to get their 2018 World Cup qualification on a bright note and was defeated 2-0 by Egypt in the second game played on Sunday.
