Team Ghana departs for Commonwealth Youth Games on Saturday

A thirteen-member team including athletics and officials will leave Accra on Saturday for the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in Bahamas.

Ghana would be represented by 12 athletes and 11 officials as they hope to make the nation proud at the Games scheduled for July 19 to July 23. 

The athletes for the seven disciplines include swimming sensations, Abeiku Jackson and Kaya Adwoa Forson, Tennis players Emmanuel Nyan Plange and Marian Ibrahim, 400-metre runner Rafiatu Nuhu, Beach volley players Kelvin Katey Carboo and Eric Tsatsu, Cyclists Solomon Tagoe and Gabriel Tettey, Boxers Alfred Kotey and Philip Quartey as well as judoka Emmanuel Kemevor.

The officials are Noah Bagerbaseh Bukari (tennis), Kodwo Abbiw Jackson (swimming), Moro Mumuni (beach volley ), Theophilus Edzie (Technical Personnel), Vincent Akai Netty, (boxing), Dennis Kweku Moore (cycling official), Joyce Boatey-Asyei (athletics coach), Martin Engmann (team doctor), Benedict Owusu (press attache) as well as Richard Akpokavie (Secretary General GOC) and Robert Sarfo Mensah (Chief Executive of the National Sports Authority).

Chef de Mission, Mawuko Afadzinu, in a press briefing on Wednesday said all the athletes are between the ages of 14 and 18 according to the rules of the Commonwealth Games Youth Games.

 

The games he said, would serve as an opportunity to the 'games of greater opportunity' to compete and gain the needed experience at the world stage.

 

He said, the Ghana Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Youth and Sports have had a successful preparations for the trip and certain it would yield good results.

"There is a positive narrative around the trip as the GOC worked closely with the Ministry to ensure that everything in terms of cost has been handled adequately,"he stated.

 

He added that, the objective for Ghana's participation is pipe up the desire in athletes, give them the mindset of champions and eventually win laurels for the country.

 

Mr. Afadzinu expressed appreciation to the NSA, the GOC and the Ministry for ensuring that everything is in place for the competition.

 

"The GOC bought tickets work $50,000 for the participants while the Ministry took care of airfare and other expenses. We have also presented committed and dedicated athletes that would come back with medals,"he explained.

 

The nation he said must take advantage of other disciplines that have bigger and better opportunity to win laurels and ensure a brighter future for Ghana sports.

The Deputy Chef de Mission of Team Ghana, Rev. Richmond Quarcoo also displayed the well branded kits that would be worn by the participants.
