Mubarak Wakaso's screamer on Friday night made sure the Black Stars of Ghana began their World Cup 2022 qualifiers on a flying note.

Wakaso's first-half strike was enough as Ghana recorded a 1-0 win over Ethiopia at the Cape Coast Stadium to go top of Group G.

This is due to Zimbabwe holding South Africa to a 0-0 draw in Harare in the other Group G clash.

Despite the Black Stars dominating proceedings in the early stages of the game at the Cape Coast they found it hard to breach the defence of the visitors.

It had to take a clanger from Teklemariam Shanko for Ghana to break the deadlock in the game in the 35th minute.

The goalkeeper made a mess of himself by allowing Mubarak Wakaso's 30-yard strike to pass through his leg to enter the net.

The goal was the only one the separated the two sides at the Cape Coast Stadium. The Black Stars were not at the best on the day but they were solid to pick up the maximum points.

CK Akonnor and his charges will in 3 days time play their second game as they take on South Africa away on Monday, September 6.

Ghana failed to make Russia 2018, a major setback for the nation and will be hoping to add South Africa to their victims on Monday to maintain their 100% record in the World Cup 2022 qualifiers as they bid to make it to Qatar.
