A Ghanaian pilgrim has died while performing this year’s Hajj in the holy city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

The deceased, identified as Hajia Yussif Hawabu, was reportedly a native of Tamale.

Confirming the incident, the Administrator of the Hajj Task Force of Ghana, Ismaila Skones, said the 63-year-old woman collapsed and passed away inside the Masjid Al-Haram (Grand Mosque) on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

He explained that Hajia Hawabu was performing Tawaf—the ritual circumambulation of the Kaaba—alongside other Ghanaian pilgrims when the unfortunate incident occurred.

She has since been buried in accordance with Islamic customs.

Mr. Skones extended condolences to the family of the late Hajia Hawabu and assured the public that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure the wellbeing of all pilgrims.

A total of 6,000 Ghanaian pilgrims are participating in this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
