The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has begun an operation to drive undocumented foreign nationals off the streets of Accra.

These foreigners, often seen sleeping on pavements and under overhead bridges with their children, have mostly resorted to begging for money from passersby.

On Friday, May 16, the service stormed areas including Kaneshie and Abossey Okai to remove 2241 street children and their guardians.

They include 384 male adults, 577 male children, 525 female adults, and 755 female children.

The operation was based on intelligence gathered over the period, where some criminal elements have organised networks and are exploiting these children, and behind that, engaging in human trafficking and other trans border crimes, a GIS official said.

A statement from GIS noted that it is currently assessing the outcome of the operation and will provide further details soon.

“The Ghana Immigration Service wishes to confirm an ongoing operation, commenced in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, aimed at addressing the presence of undocumented migrants on the streets of Accra and other cities.

“We are currently assessing the outcomes of the operation and will provide further details to the public in due course,” the statement signed by M. Amoako-Atta, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration and Head of Public Affairs, said.
