A mental patient at the Ankaful psychiatric hospital has bitten and wounded a striking nurse at the Ankaful psychiatric hospital after critical medication for him was delayed.

Healthcare delivery at the hospital is getting worse as striking nurses have abandoned the mental patients to their own fate.

Nurses and Staff of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, on Thursday, began an indefinite sit-down strike to register their displeasure with the Ministry of Health for refusing to replace their Director as requested earlier.

The staff, on October 20, this year, petitioned the Minister of Health, Mr. Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, to remove Dr. Dordoye as the Director of the hospital, on the grounds that his administrative style was oppressive thereby psychologically traumatizing the staff, among other allegations of mismanagement.

The workers were furious over the refusal of the Health Minister to sack the Medical Director of the facility, who they accused of being corrupt and having poor human relations.

The victim, a nurse who had part of his flesh almost bitten off, narrated, " He attacked one of my colleagues and I was going to separate them, before I realized his teeth were on my skin and I had no option than to wait for him to bite as long as he could because if I had struggled to free myself, he would have just bitten my flesh off".

With the help of his colleagues, the nurse was freed from the fangs of the patient and his wounds which are reported to be quite severe was treated.

Meanwhile, the director of the hospital, Dr. Eugene Dordoye in a four-page-letter has rendered an apology for "going overboard" in resolving some systematic challenges.

“I admit I sometimes went overboard either carrying out some of these changes or teaching clinicians about the patient’s conditions during a review of the patients which sometimes to them were very embarrassing.

“I apologize unreservedly to all staff at Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital who have been hurt by my approach, the CEO, MHA, Central Regional Minister, Health Minister and all others affected…” he said.
