SIM card registration begins October 1: All you need to know

The government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Communications, has set October 1, 2021, for the start of SIM card registration for all persons subscribed to a mobile network in the country.

Under the new directive, all existing mobile network subscribers will be required to present their Ghana-Cards to enable them to register, while foreigners will provide their passports and travel documents for registration.

Business entities are also to provide their business registration documents from the Registrar General's Department for registration.

Ghanaian network subscribers are eligible to register up to 10 sim cards across all mobile networks while foreigners can register three.

Below is all you need to know about the upcoming exercise.

  • Registration of SIM Cards resumes on October 1 and ends in March 2022.
  • Only Ghana Cards will be accepted to register or re-register a SIM.
  • Unregistered SIMs will be deactivated after the March 2022 deadline.
  • Foreigners visiting Ghana can acquire a SIM Card using their Passports or Travel Card but they can only use the SIM Card for 30 days after which it will be deactivated.
  • You need a Ghana Card to acquire a new sim card. Existing subscribers to register SIM cards via USSD & a sim registration app. SIM reg. begins from Oct 1 to 31st March 2022. Any unregistered sim at the end of the exercise will be blocked.
  • For the very first time in GH, there will be a SIM Register just like Brazil, Germany & Switzerland, which will serve as a database giving comprehensive statistics regarding No. of subscribers in GH & providing a resource for tracking fraudsters & criminals.
  • The minimum age for registration has been set at 15, taking into consideration the increased use of communications services since the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic and to facilitate E-education." -Ursula Owusu
  • Barring any unforeseen eventualities, SIM Registration will begin on 1st October 2021 for a six months period and end on 31st March, 2022. Any sim which is not registered at the end of this exercise will be blocked.
  • Individuals can register a total number of 10 SIM Cards across all networks and Foreigners will have a limit of 3 SIM Cards across all networks.”
  • A Central Equipment Identity Registry (CEIR) records all devices in the country and reduces the influx of smuggled and counterfeit mobile devices.
  • The Cyber Security Authority, which will commence its operations next month is being tasked to ensure full compliance with the Directive to ensure secured digital infrastructure underpins our country’s transformation agenda; the importance of digitalisation in our rapidly growing society cannot be overemphasised.”

“The SIM registration when launched will require every subscriber to provide the name and residential or occupational address, DoB, in the case of an individual and Certificate of Incorporation, in the case of a body corporate; or organization,” communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.
