Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak are set to renew their historic rivalry in the 2025 President’s Cup, scheduled for Sunday, July 6.

The announcement was made by the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) during a press briefing on Thursday, June 12, 2025, with the organisation confirming that the match will be held in honour of President John Dramani Mahama, who is serving his second term in office.

The President’s Cup is an annual fixture that has become an integral part of Ghana’s football calendar, and this year’s edition is expected to draw a huge crowd. In a gesture aimed at encouraging strong attendance and support for the domestic game, fans will be granted free entry. The move is likely to swell stadium numbers, creating an electric atmosphere that will add to the excitement of the encounter.

Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak are two of the most successful clubs in Ghanaian football, with a rich history of competition between them. Kotoko holds the record for the most President’s Cup titles, with eight wins to their name, although they suffered defeat in the 2024 edition against ASEC Mimosas. Hearts of Oak, meanwhile, have six titles and will be confident heading into the clash, having beaten Kotoko in their last two President’s Cup meetings.

The rivalry between Kotoko and Hearts of Oak is one of the fiercest in Ghanaian football, with both teams boasting huge followings and decades of shared history. Their encounters are always highly anticipated and fiercely contested. This year’s President’s Cup promises to be no different, with both sides eager to assert their dominance.
