The Ghana Police Service has deployed a specialised intelligence-led team to Gbeniyiri following renewed reprisal attacks between members of the Brifo and Fulani communities.

The decision was taken on the orders of the Inspector-General of Police as security authorities move to prevent further escalation of violence in the area.

In a statement issued on Thursday from the Regional Police Headquarters in Damongo, the command confirmed that a joint team made up of intelligence officers and investigators has been dispatched to support the existing regional security personnel on the ground.

The move, according to the police, forms part of efforts to strengthen security operations in the remote community and track down those responsible for the recent disturbances.

“The team comprising intelligence officers and investigators are providing support to the Regional Command to intensify security and to bring perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.

The statement, signed by ASP Richard Osei Yaw, indicated that the additional deployment reflects growing concern about the cycle of retaliatory attacks reported in the area.

Despite the tensions, the Savannah Regional Police Command assured residents that the situation in Gbeniyiri is currently under control.

Police said calm has largely returned to the town, while the newly deployed officers continue operations to identify and arrest individuals linked to the clashes.

Residents in and around Gbeniyiri have been encouraged to go about their normal activities without fear as security presence in the community is expected to increase in the coming days.

Authorities, however, have not confirmed whether there were casualties or arrests in connection with the incident, stating that investigations and efforts to apprehend those involved remain ongoing.
