Coming as break from a long stretch of news from the country’s central bank, at least one different from ‘whether or not the current governor will be retained’, Bank of Ghana second deputy governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has hinted the apex bank will be unveiling a new banknote in five cedi (GH¢5) denominations.

According to him, the note will be introduced on March 4, 2017 in commemoration of the Bank's 60th anniversary celebrations.

One would “recall nearly a decade ago, when the Bank of Ghana celebrated its golden jubilee with currency exhibitions and road shows across the country. Once again, on the 4th of March 2017, we shall be celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Central Banking in Ghana”, Dr Assiama stated.

He noted that the new note will not be a replacement but would be circulating alongside the existing GHC5 note as a legal tender and also serve as a collector’s item.

Speaking at the 4th Edition of the AB & David Crystal Ball Africa 2017 which held in Accra, the BoG deputy governor said “the note will have new durable security features which can be easily identified by the public as well as introduce other internationally acceptable security features which are sensitive to touch to aid the blind and visually challenged in identifying the banknotes”.

On the side of history, this would the first of a new denomination issued under the leadership of, Dr. Abdul Nashiru Issahaku as BoG governor and by having his signature on the note, will serve as the high point of his tenure which many expect would be brought to a close through a possible voluntarily resignation from the position upon mutual understanding with the new Nana Akufo-Addo led NPP government.
