Driver unions in the country are reconsidering increasing transport fares again after backtracking on the plan in December last year.
According to the Concerned Drivers Association, there are ongoing talks with the Coalition of Private Transport Operators to agree on an upward review of fares on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.
The decision to increase transport fares has been occasioned by increases in fuel prices in the past weeks.
Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association, David Agboado, said the association will issue a public notice on their decision and new transport fares before they begin engaging Parliament for the scrapping of some petroleum levies.
“We will still increase the transport fares, and we will communicate it to the public on Wednesday then after that, we will still fight for the reduction of the taxes on the petroleum prices,” he told Citi News.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the largest transport union, is expected to support the move to increase fares this time around.
During the December plan to increase the transport fares, the GPRTU stayed out.
However, the GPRTU has said its members are bucking under the pressure of hikes in the price of fuel.
General Secretary of GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire, told Citi News that the Union is expecting the government to keep its word by ensuring a reduction in the price of fuel but fuel prices have rather shot up.
