Ghana’s Government Lays Foundation for Gas Master Plan

As part of measures to address the pending energy crisis in the country, The government has laid the foundation for the Gas Master Plan by setting up a committee to oversea its implementation.

The Ministry of Energy has formally disclosed that  government is currently working on infrastructure to facilitate the reverse of gas flow from Takoradi in the Western region to Tema in the Greater region of the country.

The project, being part of the Gas Master Plan, is aimed at supplying adequate gas for electricity generation at the Tema Power Enclave.

Addressing the audience at the inauguration of the Committee for the implementation of the Gas Master Plan in Accra, Ghana’s Energy Minister – Boakye Agyarko charged its members to make critical changes in the plan where necessary.

He stated that the government is “developing the necessary infrastructure for evacuation of gas from the west to the east—this includes a reverse flow project in the WAGP”.

The Minister Further noted that, “the Master Plan is only a working document and will require periodic update and revision. It is the duty of this committee to ensure that both the plans and enabling drivers, along the entire value chain are implemented effectively and revised periodically, for the development and sustainability of Ghana’s Gas Industry”.

Finally in addressing policy issues surrounding gas development in the country, he said “We will introduce a new LPG circulation policy that requires safe and efficient delivery of LPG to homes and industry”.

The committee will be chaired by Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Energy with responsibility for the Petroleum sector – Dr. Amin Adam and the members include, CEO of GNPC, Dr. K.K Sarpong, CEO of the Petroleum Commission, Theophilous Ahwireng, CEO of the NPA, Alhassan Tampuli, CEO of the Ghana Gas Company, Dr. Ben Asante, CEO of BOST Alfred Obeng, and CEO of TOR, Isaac Osei.

The government has expressed optimism that the team is equipped to bring on board a sustainable pathway to Ghana’s gas supply and consequent energy independence.
